    “In the Heart of Chaos”

    As the first responder during the attack on the Quebec City Mosque on January 29, 2017, Jonathan Filteau was awarded the Cross of Bravery, the highest decoration given to a police officer in Quebec.

    A man with an extraordinary journey, he studied police techniques before joining the Quebec City Police Service and later the United Nations security forces as a bodyguard, where he served for years on nearly every continent. In fact, his career led him to visit over 130 countries, often under challenging conditions, encountering diverse cultures, and dealing with all sorts of realities.

    As a trainer to thousands of police officers around the world, he has maintained a calm demeanor in all circumstances and has drawn a highly positive conclusion from his past experiences. He has developed an exceptional mastery of firearms and close combat, as well as an extraordinary understanding of human behavior.

    From the teachings often born of pain and violence, Jonathan learned to decode non-verbal communication and interpret its meaning. Today, on the brink of retirement from law enforcement but still engaged in managing chaos, he applies the sum of his experiences to various business communities, both locally and abroad. He continues to observe his peers carefully to make the best decisions for them and the businesses he lends his talents to.

    Jonathan Filteau is also the author of the book “Au coeur du Chaos” in which he describes his journey.

    Excerpt from the book In the Heart of Chaos:

    “I have learned valuable lessons from all my life experiences, even the most painful ones. I ultimately concluded that it’s always possible to gain something from any situation, even the most dramatic ones. It helped me survive and maintain my balance. The result of all of this now guides me in my daily life.

    Obviously, I’ve toughened up and developed a perspective of our world that is quite different from what we know at home. I understand how social, political, religious, military, or other disruptions can influence a person’s perception. There are horrors we prefer to bury, but with which we must come to terms. With which I must come to terms. Our world is not a world of marshmallows. Those who spend their lives in cotton wool are lucky, even if they are mostly unaware of it and often make a drama out of minor inconveniences.

    There are others for whom life is merciless. People fleeing a world of terror and violence—regardless of the type of violence—seek refuge in calmer lands, hoping to find some peace and tranquility. And one day, their past reality catches up with them. These people only want to live in peace.

    I’m obviously thinking of the victims of the mosque attack. Not a single one of them would have imagined, even for a second, that they could become targets in the city of Quebec. I wish for the survivors to continue their journey gently now that this horror is over.

    I know it’s possible, despite all the pain endured, despite all the unspeakable scenes one might be subjected to. It must be possible! It’s possible! Difficult, but attainable!”
